Let’s completely ignore the material circumstances of queer people who go through this (and worse) everyday in order to feel sympathy for heterosexuals.

Especially using historically homophobic slurs against straight people. Seriously?

This “it could happen to anyone” bullshit line of thinking overlooks how power hierarchies work and how homophobia actually operates.

Homophobia is so ingrained in our society that something like this is the only way heterosexual people can apparently sympathize with queer people: If it happened to them. The film is literally predicated on that premise. And homophobia is so ingrained in our society that gay people feel the need to sympathize with those who exert power over them.

From the film’s website:

What would it be like to be bullied, beat up, and shunned by your peers? What would it be like to think that your life has no reason to live?

Gee I don’t know. Ask any of the people who are killed or driven to commit suicide because they are gay. That might answer your fucking useless question.

This film is so fucked that it can’t even take (or say it took) stories from bullied queer people.

Someone asked what my reaction to this video was in an ask: and this is a pretty good representation of it.

I HATE “reverse oppression” narratives.

It takes marginalized people and turns them into villains. It allows oppressors to stay confortable in their “sympathetic protagonists” roles.

And it ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS is the same, stupid, tripe, shallow “being mean to other people is bad” message instead of actually examining the day to day ways in which oppression is scaffolded into our culture.

Why not just, oh, actually show a story about REAL LGBTQ+ people, and their lives, and show THEM as sympathetic protagonists? For ONCE? There’s an idea.

And, a fun note: Where the fuck are all of the bi, pan, omni, demi, and other non-gay and lesbian LGBTQ+ people. That’s some nice erasure. Thanks.

I whole-heartedly disagree. Yes, this converses the long established opprosser and victim roles and sympathizes with a sexuality that has long maintained a position of privilige. Yes, this is an overly-simplified, black-and-white representation of the issues that queers face and the propagation of homophobia.

But, personally, I think we need things like this. It’s obvious from watching the video that it is allied with causes of tolerance and anti-bullying. The role-reversal isn’t intended to paint homosexuals as a villain, but to show how ridiculous homophobia is by allowing heterosexuals to relate to a similar situation.

Unfortunate as it is, while we like to think that the horror that the queer community goes through on a daily basis should be enough to ignite plenty of sympathy as it is, that just isn’t the case. Basic humanism is sadly lacking in the world, so having a sympathetic protagonist that a heterosexual (who is otherwise ignorant) can easily latch onto provides a good first step into exploring queer issues.

Hate and persecution start with dehumanization and “othering” of minorities. People have this eerie ability to distance themselves from other humans to the point of not seeing them as humans at all. That some heterosexual people can only sympathize with queer problems through a heterosexual protagonist is certainly a shame, but there are indeed heterosexuals like this. The film is not at fault for trying to reach out to them with a simple message.

Not everyone thinks critically. While a message like “being mean to people is bad” may be a shallow statement about a deep-rooted, complex problem, it’s certainly not an inherently harmful message. In fact, I think it’s quite a good one.

And honestly, I would rather show this video to my anti-intellectual, southern republican parents than I would a five-hour documentary encompassing the systematic institution of homophobia as well as the full spectrum of LGBQT.
